Maruti Vitara Brezza's Sales Jump; Honda WRV, Mahindra TUV300 Among Hotsellers

Only the newer nameplates -- Freestyle & Nexon -- register a dip in month-on-month sales in July 2018

The sub-compact SUV and crossover segment registered MoM growth of around 14 per cent in July 2018. Clearly, the demand for small SUVs and crossovers in India is on the rise. While the Maruti Vitara Brezza continues to lead the segment, new entrants like the Ford Freestyle and Tata Nexon have eaten up some market share of all their rivals ever since their launch.

Let’s have a closer look at the July 2018 sales of sub-4m SUVs and crossovers in India:

1. The Nexon and the EcoSport continue to flip-flop their positions. Nexon slips to third spot in July as EcoSport takes second

2. Only the Brezza and the WRV manage to register more sales than their respective six-month average sale. The WRV gained over 40 per cent sales in June and its last month sales also witnessed a growth of over 20 per cent

3. Only the newer nameplates - Freestyle & Nexon -- saw a MoM dip in sales

Six months sales trend – There’s no radical change in the equations as the Maruti Vitara Brezza continues to dominate the segment with average sales of 12,685 units followed by the EcoSport at 4,660 units and the Nexon at 4,264 units. The WRV is gradually picking up the pace, which could bother the Tata SUV.

Takeaways

1. All cars witness a negative year-on-year growth except for the Nexon and the Freestyle, which were launched post July 2017.

2. The TUV 300 is gradually losing the market share but Mahindra is readying a new car -- S201 -- to regain the lost ground in this segment

3. Expect some big changes in this table within a year from now. There are two new vehicles coming up in this space -- the Mahindra S201 (codename) and the Hyundai QXI (Carlino-based sub-4m SUV).
