Nawab Malik Admitted To Hospital, Condition 'Serious', Lawyer Tells Mumbai Court

The minister is under observation and at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and his condition is stable, said hospital.

New Delhi: Maharashtra minister and NCP leader Nawab Malik was taken from jail to hospital on Monday after his condition deteriorated, as reported by news agerncy ANI.

The minister is under observation at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and his condition is stable, said the hospital.

Sanjay Surase, Medical Superintendent, Sir JJ Hospital, said Malik was brought to the hospital at 10 am. “He complained of an upset stomach and his blood pressure was not stable. He is under observation at the Intensive Care Unit and his condition is currently stable,” Surase said as quoted by news agency PTI.

According to the information, the condition of Nawab Malik was bad for three days. He has filed a bail application before the special court on the medical ground.

The Enforcement Directorate was to file its reply on his bail application in the special court in Mumbai today.

His lawyer said that Malik was ill for the past few days and after his condition deteriorated, he was taken from Arthur Road Jail to JJ Hospital via stretcher.

However, the ED has asked that if the condition of the Maharashtra minister was bad, then why was it not informed to the investigating agency.

On this, the ED demanded a hearing on the next date. But the court said that the health of the accused is more important. In such a situation, the hearing will continue further. The court sought a report from JJ Hospital on the health of Nawab Malik and on May 5, it would decide whether he should be shifted to a private hospital.

It is noteworthy that earlier the Supreme Court has rejected the petition for the immediate release of Nawab Malik. While rejecting the petition of Malik arrested in the money laundering case related to Dawood Ibrahim, the court had said that it will not interfere now.

“It is pertinent to take into account that the applicant did not see any medical ground in such interim relief. Later, he also approached the Supreme Court for interim relief and the same has been rejected at the outset,” the central agency said.

The bench said that at this stage of the investigation, we are not inclined to interfere in the matter. We are not interfering at this stage. At the same time, the jail custody of Nawab Malik has also increased till 6 May.

The Supreme Court had said that the observations of the High Court were limited to whether interim relief was to be granted or not. This will not come in the way of resorting to the remedies available in law.
