Kasganj Custodial Death: Allahabad HC Orders Exhumation Of Body, Second Autopsy At AIIMS Delhi

The Police had said that Altaf hanged himself by hanging from a two and a half feet tap installed in the post.

New Delhi: In the case of death in Kasganj custodial death, the Allahabad High Court on Friday has ordered the second autopsy of the body of a 22-year-old Altaf Miyan, who died in November 2021 under 'police custody in Uttar Pradesh's Kasganj.

After the order of the court, the second post-mortem will be done under the supervision of the doctors of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi.

Altaf died in Police custody and after his death, the family members questioned the Police.

AIIMS was issued a direction for a second post-mortem by a bench comprising of Justices Anjani Kumar Mishra and Deepak Verma, who had been hearing a petition moved by Altaf's father, Chand Miyan.

"We, therefore, direct that the body of the deceased, Altaf shall be exhumed forthwith in the presence of Superintendent of Police, Kasganj. The body after it has been exhumed shall be sealed and immediately transported to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi, where a post-mortem examination of the exhumed body shall be conducted in presence of a team of doctors," said Allahabad High Court.

This entire exercise should be completed within a period of 10 days from today, it added.

"This order has been passed because it is the case of the petitioner based upon photographs brought on record, wherein the deceased, Altaf is thrown to have hung himself from a water pipe, which was installed only three feet above the ground of the toilet, the court said and listed the matter after four weeks," the order read further.

Soon after the incident of Altaf's death, the Police had said that Altaf hanged himself by hanging from a two and a half feet tap installed in the post. After this, people raised a lot of questions on this theory of the police.

The family alleged that the police picked up Altaf after coming in the night and no news was given to the family after his death in the police station.
