Who was Madan Lal Khurana? Ten things to know about deceased former Delhi CM
Madan Lal Khurana, the former Delhi CM who passed away last night, was given the title of ‘Dilli Ka Sher’.
New Delhi: Former Delhi Chief Minister Madan Lal Khurana who passed away on Saturday night after a prolonged illness at the age of 82, will be laid to rest on Sunday afternoon. His family informed that he died at around 11 pm in the night at his residence in Kirti Nagar.
The mortal remains of the former Delhi CM will be taken from his residence to BJP office where it will be kept from 12 in the noon to 2 pm for paying last respects. The final journey to Nigambodh Ghat will begin from Pant Marg at 2 pm. The last rites of the funeral will be performed at 3 pm.
Who was Madan Lal Khurana ?
- Khurana, a veteran BJP leader and a member of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) was the Chief Minister of Delhi from the year 1993 to 1996.
- In the year 2004 he was appointed the governor of Rajasthan.
- Khurana was given the title of ‘Dilli Ka Sher’ for his outstanding work for the state.
- Khurana is credited with reviving BJP in New Delhi, after BJP suffered badly in the 1984 general elections, following the death of Indira Gandhi.
- He was born on 15 October 1936 in Lyallpur, Punjab Province (British India) , which is now called Faisalabad in Punjab, Pakistan .
- He was 12 years old when his family was forced to migrate to Delhi after partition. They began to stitch their life together again at a refugee colony at Kirti Nagar in New Delhi.
- He did his graduation from Kirori Mal College under Delhi University.
- Madan Lal Khurana along with leaders Vijay Kumar Malhotra, Kedar Nath Sahani and Kanwar Lal Gupta founded the Delhi chapter of the Jan Sangh, which in 1980 transformed into BJP.
- He was the Jan Sangh's general secretary from 1965 to 1967.
- Khurana is survived by his wife, a son and two daughters. One of his sons had died last month.
