West Bengal, Assam Election 2021 Phase 2 Voting Percentage HIGHLIGHTS: Mamata Banerjee on Thursday dialed Governor Jagdeep Dhankar from Nandigram alleging that there is complete breakdown of law and order. The Governor assured that the issues raised by her will be looked into by those concerned. Meanwhile, over 73 per cent of the 73,44,631 voters exercised their franchise till 6 pm. in the second phase of polling in Assam on Thursday. WB, Assam Election 2021 Voting HIGHLIGHTS: Polling for 30 assembly seats including high-profile Nandigram in phase two is underway. The seats going to polls in the second phase are spread in four districts of South 24Parganas, Paschim Medinipur, Bankura and Purba Medinipur.

In the second phase, all eyes are on Nandigram where sitting chief minister Mamata Banerjee is taking on TMC defector and her former confidante Suvendu Adhikari. High-voltage campaign for Nandigram ended on Tuesday with a massive roadshow of Amit Shah for Suvendu, and a series of public meetings by Mamata Banerjee. Suvendu Adhikari is the sitting MLA from Nandigram, which falls under Tamluk Lok Sabha constituency currently held by BJP leader’s brother Dibyendu Adhikari.

Besides Nandigram, some other key constituencies going to polls in the second phase are Tamluk, Haldia, Bankura, Kharagpur Sadar, Chandipur, Panskura Paschim, and Moyna.

In Panskura Paschim, TMC’s Firoza Bibi, who has won twice from Nandigram, is taking on Shintu Senapati of the saffron party and Chittaranjan Das Thakur of the Left.

In Moyna, former cricketer Ashoke Dinda is the BJP candidate against Sangram Kumar Dolui of ruling Trinamool and Manik Bhownik of the Congress. Polling for phase one had taken place on March 27.

TMC To Move EC Over Violence In Nandigram: Derek O Brien

We know we'll win both (Nandigram & West Bengal). Even though we may win, we may still consider going to the Election Commission. We are considering it for a few booths: Derek O Brien

"There have been some specific incidents that CM referred to, in her statement today about booths. We'll consider taking next step because we want to do this not for just winning Nandigram or West Bengal but we need to do it for keeping democracy in place," he said.

Mamata Slams EC For Inaction On Poll Complaints, Threatens To Move Court

Despite sporadic violence and accusations of vote fraud in Nandigram, TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee said she was confident of victory from the constituency. Banerjee said she is worried about the fate of democracy given the use of money and muscle power.

"We have lodged 63 complaints since morning. But no action has been taken. We will move the court over it. This is unacceptable," the chief minister said sitting in a wheelchair outside booth 7 in Boyal in Nandigram. "The EC is working on the instructions of Amit Shah," Bengal CM alleged.

Bengal Guv Assures Action On Mamata's Complaint

"Issues flagged Mamata Banerjee a while ago on phone have been imparted to the concerned. There is full assurance of the concerned to adherence to rule of law. Am confident all will act in right spirit and earnestness so that democracy flourishes," the West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhanka said from his official Twitter handle.


Dhankar's tweet came soon after West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on Thursday dialled him from Nandigram alleging that there is complete breakdown of law and order.

Over 73% Turnout In Assam Till 5 PM, Polling Incident-Free

Over 73 per cent of the 73,44,631 voters exercised their franchise till 5 p.m. in the second phase of polling in Assam on Thursday, election officials said, adding that no untoward incident was reported from the 39 constituencies, where balloting officially ended at 6 pm. 

Senior election officials and police officers said that no incident of violence was reported so far from the 13 districts where the voting was underway.
