On the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti, Prime Minister Narendra Modi apologised to the nation and announced that the farm laws will be repealed and the process for the same will begin by the end of this month. The controversial laws were--- The Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020 and Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020.
Delhi’s borders were a witness to an almost year-long protest by the farmers after the controversial farm laws were passed by the government. Prior to PM Modi’s announcement, Bhartiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait had said that the farmer’s agitation will be intensified with tractors marching into Delhi if the laws were not taken back by November 26, marking one year to the protest.
Amid the political war of words in reaction to the centre’s decision, pictures of farmers celebrating are going viral on social media.
