UP: Police constable killed in stone-pelting by protesters after PM's rally in Ghazipur

The constable who was killed was 48-year-old Suresh Vats from Karimuddinpur police station. He hailed from Raniganj in Pratapgarh district.

New Delhi: Protesters hurled stones at the vehicles returning after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s public meeting in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, leading to death of one police constable, and injuring two people on Saturday night. The constable who was killed was 48-year-old Suresh Vats from Karimuddinpur police station. He hailed from Raniganj in Pratapgarh district. As per the Ghazipur Supreintendednt of Police Yashveer Singh those who hurled stones were the workers from the Rashtriya Nishad Party who were barred from going to the rally venue. After PM Modi left Ghazipur, the workers of Nishad Party blocked traffic at various places and started pelting stones on the vehicles that were returning from the programme venue. Vats was hit on the head by a stone when he went to end a traffic jam caused by the protests. He was immediately taken to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries the SP told news agency PTI.   He said about 15 party workers were detained. The police are trying to identify other protesters through the video footage of the incident. Action Taken: ADG Varanasi zone, PV Rama Sastry said that till now, 11 people have been arrested. According to the CMO, the reason of death of the constable is head injury. Post-mortem report is awaited. He said that the general secretary of the Nishad Party, Sanjay Nishad is the prime accused of the incident. 32 people have been named in the FIR while 60 unnamed people also mentioned in the FIR. Compensation: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced a compensation of Rs 40 lakh for the wife of the dead constable and Rs 10 lakh for his parents, the state government said. Modi had left for Varanasi when the violence in Ghazipur took place after addressing the public meeting and laying the foundation stone for a medical college and releasing a postal stamp on Maharaj Suheldev. Reactions:  Congress slammed the Uttar Pradesh government over the death the constable alleging that in Yogi Adityanath's "jungle rule" neither the people are safe, nor the police. Former CM and SP leader Akhilesh Yadav targeted CM Yogi for the incident and said that the CM irrespective of where he is, uses the language of violence. The existence of hatred in the society leads to such incidents.
