A police cavalcade carrying gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed left for the Sabarmati Central Jail in Gujarat Tuesday evening, hours after he was sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment in a 2006 kidnapping case by a court in Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, a senior official said.
Ahmad was brought from the Sabarmati Central Jail by road for the hearing in the MP-MLA court here. He was kept at the Naini Central Jail in Prayagraj before the hearing. (PTI)

Gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad, who was sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment in the 2006 Umesh Pal kidnapping case by a court in Prayagraj on Tuesday, will be sent back to Sabarmati Central Jail in Gujarat. Ahmad was brought from Sabarmati Jail by road for the hearing in an MP-MLA court here. He was kept at the Naini Central Jail in Prayagraj before the hearing.
Umesh Pal's mother says she is satisfied with the punishment of life imprisonment in the kidnapping case of his son. She said she expects a death sentence for him in the murder case of Umesh Pal.
The court has not considered this case as rare of the rarest case and hence the death sentence has not been given to mafia Atiq Ahmed and others.
All three convicts, including Atiq, have been imposed with rigorous life imprisonment and a fine of one lakh rupees each in the Umesh Pal kidnapping case.
This fine will be given to the family members of Umesh Pal.
The hearing on the quantum of punishment for all three convicts, including Atiq Ahmed, is complete.
The court can pronounce the order anytime soon.
Atiq Ahmed has been convicted under various sections including section 364A of the IPC.

Umesh Pal Kidnapping Case: Atiq Ahmed reaches Prayagraj court.
Heavy security has been deployed at Prayagraj MP-MLA Court where Atiq, his brother Ashraf and others will be produced.
Umesh Pal Kidnapping Case: Atiq Ahmed's lawyer Daya Shankar Mishra said, "The strategy would be decided only after the verdict. We have the right to appeal (in a higher court)."
Gangster Atiq Ahmed's plea seeking security has been rejected by the Supreme Court.
The court said that state will take care of him and advised his lawyers to instead approach the high court with their concern.
Speaking to media ahead of the verdict in the Umesh Pal kidnapping case, public prosecutor Gulab Chandra Agrahari said, "Hearing for 10 convicts ongoing at the Court, one convict died. The prosecution presented eight witnesses before the Court. Every person is equal in the eyes of law. Law is supreme. The sentence would depend on the Court."

Umesh Pal Case: Public prosecutor Gulab Chandra Agrahari said that eight witnesses have been mentioned to be speaking in favour of the prosecution on the basis of which the verdict will be pronounced.
He said, " The honorable court will give judgment as per the law and the decision can come anytime, even in the morning."

Atiq and Ashraf will be brought to the court from Naini Central Jail in a convoy of seven vehicles. Atiq and Ashraf might be accommodated in separate prison vans.
In view of the verdict, paramilitary force has been deployed outside the court campus. Rapid Action Force personnel also reached outside the court premises.
What Will Happen In Court – First the court will decide whether Atiq Ahmed is guilty in the Umesh Pal kidnapping case or not. If guilty, then the court will decide the punishment for him.
Ahead of hearing in the Umesh Pal kidnapping case, his wife Jaya Pal says, "I hope court sentences him (Atiq Ahmed) to death by hanging. If he lives, perhaps we won't be able be alive. Maybe it would be us next. If he is gone only then will terror be gone..."
Ahead of the hearing in the Umesh Pal kidnapping case, his mother Shanti Devi said, "...We don't have the strength to fight a case in the time to come. He (Atiq Ahmed) should be sentenced to death by hanging. If he is sentenced to life imprisonment, he can do anything from jail. He got my son killed from jail. He won't let us live if he remains there..."
District Bar Association, Prayagraj has said that the hearing will not be held in any other cases except the Umesh Pal abduction case today in the MP-MLA court of Prayagraj.
He added that a letter has been written to the Minister of District Advocates Association by the Presiding Officer of MP MLA Court. A request also has been made to pronounce a verdict on 28th March itself.
On security inside Prayagraj jail, UP jail Minister Dharamveer Prajapati said, "As soon as the court ordered that if he reaches on time, then he should be kept in jail, we were prepared with high-security barracks, body cameras & CCTV cameras since yesterday. These mafias are nurtured by the previous government."

A court on Tuesday will pronounce its verdict on the Umesh Pal kidnapping case in which gangster Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf are both accused. Atiq was brought to Prayagaj's Naini Central jail on Monday from Gujarat while Ashraf was brought in the city jail from Bareilly.
Gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed was brought to the Naini Central Jail in Prayagraj on Monday. He will be produced in court for the verdict in the 2007 case of the kidnapping of Umesh Pal, a key witness of the 2005 Raju Pal murder. Ahmed is a prime accused in the Raju Pal murder case as well.
Atiq Ahmed is a gangster-turned-politician who was an Allahabad West MLA from 1989-2004. He also served as a Lok Sabha MP from the Phulpur constituency in Uttar Pradesh between 2004 and 2009.
Born on August 10, 1962, Atiq Ahmed is named in over 100 cases. His brother Ashraf has 52 cases, wife Shaista Praveen has three, and sons Ali and Umar Ahmad have four and one cases, respectively, against them.
Atiq Ahmed first won the Allahabad West seat as an independent candidate in the 1989 UP Assembly election. He went on to win the next two elections as well. He switched to the Samajwadi Party in 1993 and then moved to Apna Dal in 1999. He quit the Apna Dal in 2003 to go back to Samjwadi Party, where he remained till his arrest in 2018.
WHY WAS ATIQ AHMED LODGED IN GUJARAT JAIL?
Atiq was arrested again in 2017, for allegedly beating up staffers of the Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences in Prayagraj. He was lodged in He contested the 2019 Lok Sabha polls from the Varanasi seat as an independent against PM Narendra Modi, but lost.
Atiq Ahmed was again placed under arrest in another case of extortion and assault in Deoria jail. He was allegedly threatening businessman Mohit Jaiswal and even assaulted him in the jail. Two other businessmen also brought in similar complaints. He was then moved to Bareilly jail. However, due to allegations of Atiq working with jail officers to run an extortion operation, he was shifted to Sabarmati Jail in Gujarat.
WHY WAS ATIQ AHMED SHIFTED TO PRAYAGRAJ JAIL?
Atiq Ahmed was moved to Naini Central Jail in Prayagraj on Monday as he is to be produced in a court in the 2007 kidnapping case of Umesh Pal. Umesh was a key accused in the Raju Pal murder case. Atiq is a prime accused in both Umesh and Raju's murders. Umesh Pal was shot dead on February 23 this year.
Atiq's brother is also lodged in a different barrack in the same jail. Both will be produced in court on Tuesday.
