New Delhi: Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi has gone abroad for two weeks for a routine check-up, sources have said. Former party president Rahul Gandhi has accompanied her. They will attend the Parliament session post their return.

The mother-son duo will miss the first part of parliament's monsoon session which is starting Monday. As per sources, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi is expected to return after a few days, after sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra joins them in US to assist her.

As per sources Gandhi has already given the directive to party MPs to raise key issues in the Parliament. They will take decisions on important issues such as the India-China LAC faceoff, the economy, Covid-19 handling as well as the issue of NEET and JEE exams.

Just a day ago, Gandhi set up a special committee to assist her in operational and organisational matters, reshuffled the Congress Working Committee and and appointed General Secretaries and state in-charges with loyalists dominating the restructuring which bore a visible stamp of Rahul Gandhi. In the special committee which will function till the leadership election is held at the next party session, only Mukul Wasnik, among the signatories to the letter calling for party reforms, has found place but he has been divested of his charge of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, while retaining Madhya Pradesh.

The other members of the committee are A.K. Antony, Ahmed Patel, K.C. Venugopal, Ambika Soni, and Randeep Singh Surjewala.
Ghulam Nabi Azad, one of the signatories, has been dropped as General Secretary.
