Weeks after the ‘letter row’ which brought in open the internal tussle of the Indian National Congress, the party bids for a structural and operational overhaul , dropping some key names from its list of general secretaries and  and setting up a new special committee.

Leaders like Gulam Nabi Azad, Ambika Soni, Moti Lal Vohra, Luzenio Falerio and Mallikarjun Khadge were dropped from the list of party’s general secretaries,  the party announced.

From among those dropped from General Secretaries Ambika Soni was placed in the new special committee to assist Sonia Gandhi. The party set up a new committee  to assist Interim President in operational and organisational matters.

The members of the new special committee are:

  • AK Antony

  • Ahmed Patel

  • Ambika Soni

  • Mukul Wasnik

  • Randeep Singh Surjewala

It is noteworthy that Ghulam Nabi Azad, who name is dropped from the list of general secretaries,  was among those who recently wrote a dissent letter challenging her leadership.

Last week,  leaders such as Jitin Prasad and Raj Babbar, who were signatories to a letter to party chief Sonia Gandhi for a re-haul of the organisation, failed to find a place in the new committees formed for Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections in 2022

Last month Sonia formed a five-member panel in Rajya Sabha including her confidants and elevating two young MPs to senior positions in Lok Sabha, giving a clear message to the dissenting leaders. However, apart from Ahmed Patel, K.C. Venugopal and Jairam Ramesh, Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad and party’s deputy leader Anand Sharma (who were the signatory in the letter) were also made part of Rajya Sabha Committee.
