New Delhi: The Indian government will bear the medical expenses of Indian student Harjot Singh, who was shot multiple times in Ukraine capital Kyiv last week, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday said.
“Government of India will be bearing expenses for Harjot Singh’s medical treatment. We are trying to ascertain his medical status,” MEA official spokesperson Arindam Bagchi told a media briefing.
“Our embassy is trying to get an update on his health status...trying to reach out but facing trouble as it's a conflict zone,” he added, ANI reported.
The Indian student was shot multiple times while trying to escape from the Ukrainian capital in a cab last week and suffered a fractured leg.
He was later taken to a hospital in Kyiv where he was given treatment.
Harjot Singh was trying to make his way to Lviv from Kyiv city via the metro, but the Ukrainian forces who were stationed there didn't allow the Indian students to board the trains.
He then met two male students and they decided to hire a taxi.
Harjot Singh said that the first bullet entered through the window and missed him.

The Indian student said that he was shot at two or three times, including one near his chest and one on the leg which has been fractured.
Harjot Singh, who is from Delhi’s Chattarpur, finally gained consciousness in the hospital after which he began contacting his parents and then the embassy for help.
Harjot said that he has been in contact with many officials but they haven't tried to help him even though he needs a safe passage and some extra help to make it out of Kyiv because of his fractured leg.
