Punjab Governor Purohit Approves Special Assembly Session On Sept 27 After Faceoff With CM Mann

The announcement came just days after the Governor had on September 22 withdrawn his orders for holding a special Assembly session where the government was supposed to hold a trust vote.

New Delhi: Punjab governor Banwarilal Purohit has approved the special session of Assembly to be held on September 27 at 11 am in Chandigarh, said Punjab Assembly speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan on Sunday. The announcement came just days after the Governor had on September 22 withdrawn his orders for holding a special Assembly session where the Bhagwant Mann-led government was supposed to hold a trust vote.

“The Hon. Governor, Punjab, has very kindly acceded to our request and summoned the Punjab Vidhan Sabha to meet for it's third session on 27.9.2022 at 11.00 AM at Chandigarh,” Sandhwam posted on Twitter.

The Punjab CM had on Thursday said that an Assembly session would be convened on September 27 as per a report by news agency ANI adding that  issues of electricity and stubble burning will be discussed in the session.

The order to hold a session to table a "confidence motion" by the AAP-led Punjab government was withdrawn by Governor Purohit due to the "absence of specific rules" to do so, the news agency had reported. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party had dubbed the decision as a part of ‘Operation Lotus’ in reference to the Union government and the Bharatiya Janata Party.

CM Mann had also said that he would move the Supreme Court against the governor for withholding the order.

The tussle between the CM and governor escalated on Saturday with the latter writing a letter to CM Mann saying the chief minister's legal advisors were not adequately briefing him. The governor also said it appears the chief minister was "too much angry" with him.

Purohit had on Friday sought details of the legislative businesses to be taken up in the proposed Assembly session on Tuesday, sparking a strong reaction from Mann, who said it was "too much" since getting the governor's consent for convening the session is a "formality".
