Jailed pro-Khalistani MP from Punjab, Amritpal Singh will launch a political party in Punjab on January 14 on the eve of Maghi Mela. The party will be floated by his father, Tarsem Singh who said the outfit will be floated from the Muktsar district of the state.
Amritpal Singh will lead the party when he comes out from prison, his father said, adding till then he will take its rein with him, reported PTI.
Singh said the party's name and agenda would be announced in the presence of the 'Sikh Sangat'.
Amritpal Singh, the head of the 'Waris Punjab De' outfit, who has styled himself after slain Khalistani terrorist Bhindranwale, is currently lodged in Assam's Dibrugarh Jail under the National Security Act.
He was arrested in Moga's Rode village on April 23, 2023, after a month-long police chase. He was wanted by the police for barging into the Ajnala Police Station with his supporters on February 23, 2023, breaking barricades and brandishing swords and guns.
His supporters clashed with the police in an attempt to free one of his aides from custody.
Singh contested the Lok Sabha elections held last year as an Independent candidate and won the Khadoor Sahib parliamentary constituency. The 31-year-old radical preacher won the seat by 197,120 votes over his nearest rival, Congress candidate Kulbir Singh Zira.
Singh and another jailed MP, Kashmiri leader Sheikh Abdul Rashid, were granted parole to take the oath as Lok Sabha MPs. Singh was brought to the Parliament complex separately in the morning and took the oath in the chamber of the Lok Sabha Speaker, away from the media glare.
Their parole orders stated that during their temporary release, they could neither speak to nor address the media on any issue or make any statements. Their family members were also barred from making any statement in any form to the media.
