'Hope She Functions As Custodian Of Constitution Without Fear': Yashwant Sinha Congratulates Droupadi Murmu

Presidential Election Result 2022: Around 34 opposition parties were backing Yashwant Sinha's candidature in the Presidential Election 2022.

Presidential Election Result 2022: Joint opposition's presidential candidate Yashwant Sinha has lost the electoral battle for the top democratic post to the BJP-led NDA's candidate Droupadi Murmu. On losing the Presidential poll in 2022, Yashwant Sinha congratulated Murmu saying, "I heartily congratulate Droupadi Murmu on her victory in Presidential Election 2022. I hope—indeed, every Indian hopes—that as 15th President she functions as Custodian of the Constitution without fear or favour. I join fellow countrymen in extending best wishes to her."

"I sincerely thank the leaders of the Opposition political parties for choosing me as their consensus candidate in this election. I also thank all members of the Electoral College who voted for me," Sinha said in his Tweet.

"Despite the outcome of election, I believe it has benefited Indian democracy in 2 important ways. First, it brought most Oppn parties on a common platform. This is indeed the need of hour & I appeal to them to continue Opposition unity beyond Presidential Election," he added.

In the results declared by the returning officer for the Presidential election, Rajya Sabha Secretary General, PC Mody said the 15th president of India Droupadi Murmu secured 6,76,803 votes as opposed to Yashwant Sinha's 3,80,177 votes.

Around 34 opposition parties were backing Yashwant Sinha's candidature in the Presidential Election 2022.

Yashwant Sinha began his political journey with the Janata Party in 1984. From 1992 to 2018, Sinha was a member of the BJP and was also a union minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government.

Sinha's disagreement with BJP started after Narendra Modi came to power in the Centre with a thumping majority in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and veteran leaders were moved to 'Margdarshak Mandal'. As per BJP, Margdarshak Mandal is an advisory committee but many ageing leaders saw it as a sidelining move.

He became a vocal critic of the BJP on several issues, ultimately resigning from the party in 2018. Later in 2021, he joined the TMC where he was appointed as the party's national vice president and later nominated as the presidential candidate.
