Who Is Qamar Sheikh?
Born to a Muslim family In Kaanchi, Qamar Sheikh was married to Mohsin Sheikh in 1981. After her marriage, she migrated and settled in India.
Sheikh met with PM Modi 35 years ago in 1990 and has known him since then. She met the Prime Minister through the late Swaroop Singh, who was the then Governor of Gujarat. Every year, Sheikh makes rakhi for him with her own hands, and the PM gets it tied on his wrist by her'sister'.
Speaking to Aaj Tak Sheikh, she said that she does not buy rakhis from the market. "I make many Rakhis with my own hands every year before Raksha Bandhan, and in the end I tie the Rakhi that I like the most on his wrist," she further stated.
For the 30th year of this ritual, Sheikh said she is preparing something special. "The rakhi I have prepared this year, I have made it on velvet. I have used pearls, metal embroideries and tikki in the Rakhi," she told Aaj Tak.
She also stated that her tickets are booked to Delhi for August 19, a day before Raksha Bandhan. Sheikh underlined that before the Covid-19 pandemic, she used to tie the rakhi on the PM's wrist, but she was not able to do the same in the years 2020, 2021, and 2022 due to the pandemic.
Last year, however, she travelled to the national capital with her husband and tied the rakhi. Sheikh hopes for an invitation for the Raksha Bandhan celebrations this year also. Sheikh said that she is praying for the good health of her brother. She also said that the Prime Minister will continue the public welfare work he has done for the last decade.
