The meeting comes a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid a surprise visit to Leh, in Ladakh, the centre of India-China tensions. He addressed the soldiers and boosted their morale amid the ongoing border dispute with China, which escalated after the June 15 clashes in the higher reaches of that region with Chinese troops in which 20 army personnel sacrificed their lives for the nation. After the meeting, the Rashtrapati Bhavan tweeted, "Prime Minister @narendramodi called on President Kovind and briefed him on the issues of national and international importance...".

The meeting assumes high significance at the time of heightened tensions with immediate neighbor China. While India has been busy in border dispute with China, reports claim that Pakistan too has moved a good amount of troops along the Gilgit Baltistan border.

Meanwhile, in New Delhi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh along with Home Minister Amit Shah visited DRDO-built Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel Covid-19 Hospital in Delhi Cantonment. When quizzed about defence front, Singh said that India is fully prepared to face all kinds of challenges thrown at it.
