PM Modi Calls For Secular Civil Code As 'Need Of Hour' During Independence Day Speech

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the civil code which is existing in the country right now is communal in nature.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday called for a secular civil code in the country during his address to the nation on the 78th Independence Day. In his speech, PM Modi said that the civil code that the country is living with right now is communal in nature whereas a secular civil code is needed in the country. 

 "Supreme Court has held discussions regarding Uniform Civil Code, again and again, it has given orders several times," noted Modi. 

"A large section of the country believes - and it is true, that the Civil Code that we are living with is actually a Communal Civil Code in a way...a civil code with discrimination," he said. 

Modi said that there should be a "comprehensive discussion on this serious topic in the country." "Everyone should bring their ideas to the table. Laws which divide the country and cause inequality in the society, such laws can't have a place in the society," the PM remarked. 

"I would say that it is the need of the hour to that there be a Secular Civil Code in the country...only then would we be free of the discrimination on the basis of religion...," he added.

PM Modi made the comment as discussions regarding a Uniform Civil Code are prevalent in the country. 

During his address, Modi also spoke about dynasty politics and casteism saying both things are harming India's democracy.
