Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid his tributes to the freedom fighters of the country as he addressed the nation on the occasion of 78th Independence Day.
"Country indebted to freedom fighters, it is a day to remember their sacrifices," he said.
"Today is the auspicious day when we celebrate and salute those who sacrificed their lives for the country and its freedom... Those 'Azadi Ke Deewane' made us fortunate to celebrate this Independence Day," he added.
He also expressed his sympathies to the families who have been affected by natural calamities across the country saying that the natural disasters have heightened the concern over the last few years.
Speaking on the theme of this year's Independence Day, 'Viksit Bharat', PM Modi said people made many suggestions to make India developed by 2047, including making a nation manufacturing hub, and seed capital. Governance reforms, a speedy justice delivery system, and promoting of traditional medicines were also suggested by the people to make 'Viksit Bharat'.
Modi hailed the policies of his government, saying Vocal for Local has become a "new mantra" for the economic system. "Every district has started taking pride in its produce. There is an environment of 'One District One Product'...," he said.
He underscored that the Jal Jeevan Mission has reached 15 crore beneficiaries throughout the country.
"People want 'shri anna (millets)' to reach every dining table of the world as a super food," he remarked.
Lauding the armed forces of the country, the Prime Minister said, "When the country's armed forces carry out surgical and air strikes, every Indian is filled with pride."
In his address, Modi stressed reforms for the country saying the government's commitment is not for temporary applause.
"Earlier, people wanted change but their aspirations were not paid heed to, we brought about big reforms on the ground," he remarked, adding: "Our commitment to reforms not for temporary applause or due to compulsions, but has resolve to strengthen the country."
A new modern system is emerging in various sectors in the country, be it MSME, education, health, transport, or agriculture, said PM Modi, adding"Due to our policies, all these sectors are getting support."
He noted that 10 crore women are joined with women's self-help groups. "I am happy that our CEOs are making us proud and on the other hand, women from rural areas are becoming 'lakhpati didi' through SHGs."
Bringing focus to the space sector, PM Modi said the space sector needs to be made modern. Many start-ups have emerged in the space sector and many private satellites and rockets have been launched, he noted.
