Background

Parliament Winter Session HIGHLIGHTS: Hello and welcome to the Parliament Winter Session Live blog, please follow this space for all the latest news and updates on the Winter Session of the Parliament. On Wednesday, the Lok Sabha passed the three bills that seek to overhaul the criminal justice system in the country.

The three bills — the Bharatiya Nyaya (Second) Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha (Second) Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya (Second) Bill were introduced by Union minister Amit Shah in the Lower House saying that full implementation of the three bills will make the Indian judicial system the most modern justice system in the world.

These bills which aim at replacing the colonial-era Indian Penal Code, 1860; the Code of Criminal Procedure Act, 1898; and the Indian Evidence Act of 1872, respectively were passed with a voice vote in the House.

"We have made the legislations victim-centred while fixing the accountability of the police," said the Union home minister while replying to a debate on the bills in the Lok Sabha.

The three bills received the nod amid a reduced strength of MPs from the opposition faction after two more lawmkaers were suspended on Wednesday taking the total number of suspensions in the Lower House to 97. With the fresh suspensions, the number of members suspended from the Lok Sabha as well as the Rajya Sabha since December 14 went up to 143.

Terming the three criminal justice bills as "draconian", the Congress alleged that such a vast number of MPs were "thrown out" of both the Houses so that Shah could get them passed in Lok Sabha without any informed dissent.

"Today the Home Minister got the 3 draconian Criminal Justice Bills passed in the Lok Sabha without any informed dissent," said Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh in a post on X.

Tomorrow he will get them passed in the Rajya Sabha too without any different viewpoint expressed on them by the best legal minds.

"Now you know why 144 INDIA MPs were thrown out of both Houses," he said.
