'Genocide In Manipur': Oppn's Retort As BJP Points At Crimes Against Women In Rajasthan, Bengal
Opposition and BJP engaged in a war of words in Rajya Sabha over the Manipur issue as Parliament witnessed massive chaos for another day.
Parliament's monsoon session witnessed another chaotic sitting on Tuesday as Manipur remained the focus of the opposition's agenda while the ruling Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) invoked examples from Rajasthan, West Bengal and Chhattisgarh to counter them. Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD) MP Manoj Jha retorted to BJP and said that what is happening in Manipur is 'genocide' while the incidents in the other states are totally different. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said that Manipur is burning and while the opposition is talking about the situation in the northeastern state, PM Narendra Mod is speaking about East India Company.
Kharge's remarks came in response to PM Modi's jibe at the opposition's INDIA alliance that even Britishers' East India Company, terror outfits like 'Indian Mujahideen' and 'Popular Front of India' have 'India' in their names.
The Congress chief asked if the government is ready for a discussion on Manipur then why it is not talking on Rule 267. " If you can talk about East India Company then why don't you talk about Manipur?" Kharge asked in the upper house.
Reacting to opposition leaders' remarks, BJP MP Piyush Goyal called the Manipur issue 'sensitive' adding that it is necessary to show sensitivity over the matter. Thrashing the opposition, Goyal said that they are trying to hide their failure, adding that the discussion should also be held on crimes against women in West Bengal and Rajasthan.
"If the opposition is sensitive, then they should hold the discussion. Their misdeeds will come to the fore," Goyal said in the Rajya Sabha.
Notably, a video of two Manipuri women being paraded naked by a group of men in the state went viral a day before parliament's monsoon session triggering a nationwide outrage. PM Modi condemned the incident, which took place in early May, and said the culprits will be punished. Since then, the opposition has been demanding his statement inside the Parliament and a discussion on the situation in the state.
Meanwhile, a video of two women being stripped naked and thrashed by other women in West Bengal's Malda also took the internet by storm. BJP questioned the West Bengal government over the issue.
In another incident, Congress MLA Rajendra Gudha was sacked from CM Ashok Gehlot-led Rajasthan cabinet for speaking against the state government over the issue of atrocities against women. The minister later threatened to expose 'corruption' done by the Gehlot government and the development drew a flack from the opposition BJP in the state.
