Bill to amend Waqf law introduced in Lok Sabha. Union minister Kiren Rijiju proposes sending the Waqf (Amendment) Bill to the Joint Parliamentary panel.
Speaking in the Lok Sabha on Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said," This bill has been now titled - ‘United Waqf Act Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development Act', 1995- 'UMEED'"
Defending the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, Minister of Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju said, "With this bill, there is no interference in the freedom of any religious body....Forget about taking anyone’s rights, this bill has been brought to give rights to those who never got them...."
On Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, Congress MP Manish Tewari said, "The Bill is violative of various provisions of the Constitution of India. The Bill is also violative of the legislative competence of the government to even bring this Bill to Parliament because there is no entry in the union list which pertains to religious endowments. So under those circumstances, the Bill suffers from the malady of excessive delegation of powers, which is an assault on the federal structure...The bill needs to be withdrawn."
Samajwadi Party MP Akhilesh Yadav speaks in Lok Sabha on Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, "Yeh bill jo introduce ho raha hai woh bahut sochi samjhi rajneeti ke tehat ho raha hai...Speaker sir, I heard in the lobby that some of your rights are also going to be taken away and we will have to fight for you....I oppose this bill."
Responding to Akhilesh Yadav's claims, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, "Akhilesh ji, is tarah ki golmol ki baat aap nahi kar skate..Aap nahi ho Speaker ke adhikar ke sanrakshak."
On Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi said, "This bill violates the principles of Articles 14, 15 and 25 of the Constitution. This bill is both discriminatory and arbitrary...By bringing this bill, you (the Central govt) are doing the work of dividing the nation not uniting it. This bill is an evidence of the fact that you are an enemy of the Muslims."

On Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, RSP MP NK Premachandran in Lok Sabha said, "You are totally disempowering the Waqf Board and the Waqf council...You are dismantling the system. It is against the principles of the Constitution. I caution the govt that if this law is put through judicial scrutiny then it will definitely be struck down."

Opposing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 in Lok Sabha, DMK MP Kanimozhi said, "It is a direct violation of Article 30 which deals with minorities to administer their institutions. This bill targets a particular religious group..."
Congress MP KC Venugopal opposed Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 in Lok Sabha. He said, "This bill is a fundamental attack on the Constitution…Through this bill, they are putting a provision that non-Muslims also be members of the Waqf governing council. On the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 to be introduced in Lok Sabha today, former Union Minister & BJP Leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said, "...This bill is to provide a solution to the harassment happening in the name of the Waqf Board system. This is the need of the hour. Within the framework of the constitution, this Bill is being brought and it will strengthen the path of development...There should be proper discussion on it but you cannot stop it, you cannot mislead it..."
Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and TMC MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay have demanded that the Waqf (Amendment) Bill be sent to the standing committee of Parliament for scrutiny after it was introduced. The Congress has decided to oppose the Bill, which will be introduced in Parliament today.
Congress MP Hibi Eden also gave notice to oppose the bill. Congress MP DK Suresh, who is the party's chief whip in the Lok Sabha, said that the opposition is not in favour of this bill.
BJP MP Naveen Jindal said "This whole experience will make Vinesh stronger. The Haryana government has announced that whatever facilities are given to the silver medalist, all those facilities will be given to her... Vinesh is our daughter, she is very strong. She will not retire, her enemy will retire and our daughter will fight more strongly in the future... I believe that there should be no politics on this..."
Congress MP Deepender Hooda says, "Vinesh has not lost but she has won the hearts of crores of people. The sports system has lost. The government should give her all the facilities that are given to a gold medallist... Today a Rajya Sabha seat is vacant (in Haryana), we did not have a majority but if there is any suitable person in the country to become an MP then it is Vinesh. Because she has emerged as a symbol of inspiration, courage for the world and the country..."

Earlier, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar condemned the behaviour of TMC MP Derek O’Brien's behaviour while protesting against not being allowed discussion over Vinesh Phogat's disqualification from the Paris Olympics. The Chairman said, “You are shouting at the Chair. I condemn this behaviour. Can anyone countenance such conduct?...”

The proceedings of Parliement are expected to be stormy on Thursday with the Treasury bench set to introduce the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, in Lok Sabha, to further amend The Wakf Act, 1995. The bill proposes to ensure more accountability and transparency in the functioning of Waqf Boards and mandatory inclusion of women in these bodies.
With the bill proposing far-reaching changes in the Wakf Act, several Opposition parties have said they would resist the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government's plans. The proceedings of Parliament began on a stormy note on Thursday with Opposition MPs stating a walkout from Rajya Sabha after being denied discussion on wrestler Vinesh Phogat's disqualification from Paris Olympics. Meanwhile, the Opposition, led by Congress also opposed the introduction of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha on Thursday. The government moved the Bill proposing significant changes to the 1995 law in the Lower House today. The Bill proposes the inclusion of Muslim women on Waqf boards and ensures verification of land before a board announces it as a Waqf property. While the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has termed the proposed move as ‘unacceptable’, The INDIA bloc parties said they will oppose any changes to the Waqf Act.
Opposition parties have demanded that the Waqf (Amendment) Bill be sent to Parliament's standing committee for scrutiny after it is introduced, with the government telling the Business Advisory Committee that it will take a call after assessing the sense of Lok Sabha. The government said at the Committee's meeting that it will not press for discussion on the Bill and its passage following its introduction in Lok Sabha on Thursday. There is a strong possibility that the government may agree to refer the Bill, which is being opposed by some Muslim organisations, to a parliamentary panel, according to a report by news agency PTI.
