Oppn Likely To Boycott RS Business Advisory Panel Meet To Mount Pressure On PM For Statement On Manipur
Opposition parties are likely to boycott the meeting to protest against PM Modi not speaking on Manipur violence in Parliament.
Opposition alliance INDIA is likely to boycott a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) of Rajya Sabha to be held on Thursday to protest against Prime Minister Narendra Modi not speaking on Manipur violence in Parliament, a senior leader said, as reported by the news agency PTI. The Rajya Sabha BAC has 11 members including the Vice President as its ex-officio chairman. Three MPs from the 26-member INDIA are on the BAC committee -- one each from Congress, RJD and TMC.
The parties are likely to send someone who is not a member as an "observer" to the meeting, PTI reported citing sources. However, it is not clear if such an "observer" will be allowed to attend the meeting.
Earlier, several opposition leaders had walked out of a BAC meeting on July 20 to mount pressure on PM Modi over the Manipur issue in Parliament and the Centre bringing a bill to replace an ordinance on the control of services in Delhi despite it being sub-judice. Leaders of the Congress and other opposition parties including the Left, TMC, DMK, RJD, NCP and AAP walked out of the meeting after their protest in writing was not lodged by the chairman.
Meanwhile, all the MPs of the opposition alliance will wear 'black' colour clothes to the Parliament on Thursday as a mark of protest against the Manipur issue. The Monsoon session, which began on July 20, has so far been marred by continuous disruptions by the opposition over the ethnic violence in Manipur, particularly over a viral video showing two women being paraded naked by a mob in the northeastern state.
The video rocked both houses of the Parliament, forcing early adjournments since day one with the Opposition demanding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement on the issue. In a bid to corner PM Modi over the Manipur ethnic violence, the opposition parties on Wednesday moved a no-confidence motion against the government in Lok Sabha. It was tabled by Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and BRS MP Nama Nageswara.
