40 Years Of Operation Meghdoot: What Has Changed So Far At Siachen Glacier, Army Reveals

On the occasion, Key Defense officials shed light on major strides in enhancing the operational capabilities in the Siachen Glacier region.

The Indian Army on Friday (April 13) commemorates the 40th anniversary of Operation Meghdoot, the operation that was carried out on the challenging terrains of Siachin glaciers. On the occasion, Key Defense officials shed light on major strides in enhancing the operational capabilities in the Siachen Glacier region. Including the development of heavy-lift helicopters and logistic drones, the security forces have left no stone unturned in improving the supply chains to the region, especially during harsh winters, the Indian Army officials said today.

Here is the list of major strides that the army has implemented to enhance operational capabilities in the Siachen Glacier region:

Improved Access:

Improved access to specialised clothing, mountaineering gear, and advanced rations has fortified soldiers' resilience in the world's coldest battlefield. Furthermore, the integration of Pocket Weather Trackers equips personnel with real-time weather updates and avalanche warnings, underscoring the commitment to soldier safety and operational efficiency.

Improved Mobility:

The Army said that there has been noteworthy improvement in the aspect of mobility. The development of an extensive network of tracks and the introduction of All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) have significantly improved mobility across the glacier.

The army credited the achievement to initiatives like the DRDO-developed ATV bridges, which have enabled the army to overcome natural obstacles. The High-quality Dyneema ropes in aerial cableways ensure seamless supply lines to even the most remote outposts.

Revolutionised Communication:

According to the Army, Mobile and Data connectivity has improved considerably. The introduction of VSAT technology has revolutionised communication on the glacier. The Army said the initiative has provided troops with data and internet connectivity.

This leap in technology has enhanced real-time situational awareness, telemedicine capabilities, and the well-being of our soldiers by keeping them connected with their families, the Indian Army said.

“Recent initiatives concerning the improvement of connectivity have ensured that personnel in forward posts in Northern and Central Glaciers have access to fresh ration and vegetables instead of tinned ration; an aspect that could not be imagined a few years back,” the Indian Army said.

“Fresh rations and vegetables are now a reality for our forward posts, thanks to new logistic initiatives. State-of-the-art medical infrastructure at Siachen, including telemedicine nodes established by ISRO, provides critical medical support not only to our troops but also to the local populace and tourists in the Nubra Valley,” it added further.

Improved Medical Facilities:

According to the Indian Army, the medical facilities in Partapur and Base Camp boast some of the best medical and surgical specialists in the country, state-of-the-art HAPO chambers, and Oxygen Generation Plants besides life support systems.

This has ensured that all endeavours are made to save every life in this challenging terrain, it said.

Operation Meghdoot:

Launched on April 13, 1984, under the leadership of Lieutenant General Manohar Lal Chibber, Lieutenant General PN Hoon, and Major General Shiv Sharma, the operation’s primary objective was to pre-empt the seizure of Sia La, and Bilafond La passes by the Pakistan Army.

While the actual operation and its aftermath are well known to military enthusiasts and laypeople alike, what is less well known is the meticulous planning that ensured the Pakistan Army was caught off guard and denied access to the Glacier as well as the key heights and passes surrounding it.
