Eminent Writer And Odisha CM's Sister, Gita Mehta, Passes Away At 80. PM Modi Extends Condolences

Author, documentary filmmaker, and journalist Gita Mehta passed away in Delhi at the age of 80. PM Narendra Modi extended condolences to Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on the passing away of his sister.

Renowned author Gita Mehta passed away in Delhi on Sunday at the age of 80, news agency PTI reported. Gita Mehta was the daughter of veteran politician Biju Patnaik and sister to Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. Born in the year 1943 in New Delhi to Biju and Gyan Patnaik, Gita Mehta pursued her education both in India and at the prestigious University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.

Throughout her illustrious career, Gita Mehta penned several notable books, including "Karma Cola," "Snake and Ladders," "A River Sutra," "Raj," and "The Eternal Ganesha."

In 2019, Gita Mehta's contributions to the world of literature and education were honoured by the Indian government when she was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian honour. However, she declined this prestigious accolade citing political reasons.

Gita Mehta's creative talents extended beyond the realm of writing. She embarked on ventures in television, producing and directing a notable portfolio of at least 14 television documentaries that aired on prominent networks in the United Kingdom, Europe, and the United States.

Furthermore, Gita Mehta ventured into journalism, working as a television journalist for the esteemed US network NBC.

Tributes from fellow authors, public personalities, and admirers are poured in. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the personalities extending condolences to CM Patnaik.

"I am saddened by the passing away of noted writer Smt. Gita Mehta Ji. She was a multifaceted personality, known for her intellect and passion towards writing as well as film making. She was also passionate about nature and water conservation. My thoughts are with @Naveen_Odisha Ji and the entire family in this hour of grief. Om Shanti," he wrote on X.
