No-Trust Motion Debate: Amit Shah, Top Ministers To Speak Today. Oppn To Step Up Manipur Offensive

No Confidence Motion Debate: After a six-hour debate on the no-confidence motion in Lok Sabha on Tuesday, sparks are set to fly on Day 2, with top ministers, including Amit Shah, set to speak today.

Following a fiery six-hour debate on the no-confidence motion against the BJP-led government on Tuesday, sparks are also set to fly on Day 2 of the discussion. While the Opposition parties questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'maun vrat' on the Manipur violence and brought up issues like inflation, the BJP attacked the INDIA alliance and Congress over dynastic politics.

The Lok Sabha has approved a 16-hour discussion on the no-confidence motion. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi are scheduled to reply to the debate on Thursday.

While the BJP government faces no threat from the no-trust motion as the NDA has a comfortable majority in Lok Sabha, the Opposition has said the objective was to push PM Modi to reply in Parliament on the Manipur issue.

No-Confidence Motion Debate Day 2: Here Are The Top Developments

  • The Manipur violence is set to dominate the debate on the no-confidence motion on Wednesday. On Day 1 of the debate, the Congress said the Opposition was forced to bring the motion to break Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'maun vrat' and demanded the resignation of Manipur CM Biren Singh.
  • On Wednesday, sparks are set to fly as top ministers, including Home Minister Amit Shah, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani and Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, are likely to participate in the debate.
  • Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who was reinstated in Parliament on Monday, is likely to speak on Thursday. Today, Rahul will be attending a public meeting at Banwar in poll-bound Rajasthan.
  • On Tuesday, Congress' Gaugav Gogoi, who initiated the debate, mounted a fierce attack on the Prime Minister, asking why Modi had not visited strife-torn Manipur and why it took 80 days to break his silence on the issue.
  • The Congress MP from Assam said a government that speaks of "one India" had created "two Manipurs" -- one living in hills and the other in the valley.
  • BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, who started the debate form the government side, said the motion was brought by the Opposition to test the confidence of its own INDIA alliance members in each other.
  • Dubey also took a swipe at former Congress chief Sinia Gandhi, saying, she was following the traditional Indian woman's way of "bete ko set karna hai, damaad ko bhent karna hai (Has to set her son, and give gift to her son-in-law)".
  • Union Minister Kiren Rijiju blamed the negligent attitude of previous Congress governments for the current issues in Manipur. "This no-confidence motion has been brought at a very wrong time and in a wrong manner. The Congress party will regret it later," Rijiju said.
  • The BJD, which has opposed the no-confidence motion against the government besides the YSRCP, said what happened in Manipur was due to "legacy issues" running back several decades.
  • TMC MP Saugata Roy said PM Modi was destroying federalism in the country. NCP MP Supriya Sule demanded the resignation of CM Biren Singh.
