Suspense Over Choice Of Assam CM Likely To End In BJP Meeting Tomorrow, Hints Himanta Biswa Sarma

The BJP central leadership had summoned both leaders for a meeting to discuss the leadership issue of the next government in Assam. Sarma, however, kept his cards close to his chest and refused to divulge what transpired in the meeting.

New Delhi: With the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led alliance all set to form the government for the second consecutive term in Assam post a splendid victory in the assembly elections, caretaker Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal accompanied by his Cabinet colleague Himanta Biswa Sarma met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and party national president J.P. Nadda in the national capital amid speculation over the state’s next Chief Minister.

The BJP central leadership had summoned both leaders for a meeting to discuss the leadership issue of the next government in Assam.

Sarma, however, kept his cards close to his chest and refused to divulge what transpired in the meeting.

“The BJP Legislative meet may take place in Guwahati tomorrow. Answers of all questions will come out of that meeting,” he told the media after the meeting at Shah’s residence.

This comes as the BJP is also yet to hold a meeting of its parliamentary board, which normally decides key issues like who will be the Chief Minister of a state.

Reports suggest the BJP central leadership is at the moment in two minds and finding it tough to choose between Sonowal and Sarma for the top post in Assam.

Securing a comfortable majority in the assembly elections, the BJP-led NDA retained power in Assam winning 75 seats in the 126-member assembly.
