Nagaland: Another Firing Incident Between Militants, Assam Rifles Personnel Along India-Myanmar Border

This is the second incident reported in a day as earlier a firing incident occurred between militants and Assam Rifle troop in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tirap Changlang along the India-Myanmar border.

New Delhi: Another incident of firing between suspected militants and Assam Rifle personnel occured in Nagaland’s Dan Pangsha area along the India-Myanmar border on Tuesday, reported news agency ANI quoting Hiazu Meru, Deputy Commissioner, Noklak district. “So far there is no report of any casualty in the incident,” Meru told the news agency.

This is the second incident reported in a day as earlier a firing incident occurred between militants and Assam Rifle troop in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tirap Changlang along the India-Myanmar border. A Junior Commissioned Officer sustained minor injury on his hand, Defence PRO, Tezpur said, quoted by the news agency.

As per the report quoting PRO as saying, the incident in Arunachal Pradesh took place while the troops were undertaking enhanced patrolling activities in view of heightened vigil for the Independence Day.

According to a report by Hindustan Times, United Liberation Front of Asom - Independent  (ULFA-I) and the Yung Aung faction of National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang) (NSCN-KYA), which have camps in Myanmar, are suspected to be involved in the attack based on the initial probe.

The attack comes just three days after these two groups called for a shutdown in North Eastern states of Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura, and Meghalaya and asked people not to participate in “fake Independence Day activities”.

According to the HT report, the groups said that it was “worthless” to celebrate Independence Day citing declining standards of living and an economic slowdown following the Covid pandemic as its reasons.

“It is unfair, historically irrelevant and worthless for a state, which is unable to stand by the suffering problem in such a time of declining living standards to celebrate the 76th pretentious Independence Day,” the statement said.
