New Delhi: In a move to ensure maximum safety for two-wheeler riders in Mumbai, the Traffic Police has made it mandatory for pillion riders to wear a helmet along with the rider. In a tweet on Wednesday, the Mumbai Traffic Police said, “Persons riding a two wheeler including the rider and pillion are hereby urged to wear a helmet.”
“As per MVA, action will be taken in case of violation of this rule for pillion rider as well. We will start implementing after 15 days from now,” the Mumbai Traffic Police added in a tweet. In case of violation of this rule, action will be taken after 15 days as per the Motor Vehicle Act, said.

In April, the Mumbai Traffic police launched a special drive on complaints from residents and commuters that the delivery boys had been haphazardly riding on the streets of Mumbai and creating a ruckus.
Started on April 5, the drive in its first 20 days witnessed 1,983 delivery executives working for a host of food and grocery delivery platforms being fined for riding without helmets,according to the Hindustan Times report.
The drive was launched after the Mumbai police commissioner Sanjay Pandey warned the representatives of such delivery companies and instructed them to ensure that their delivery agents follow traffic rules.
Meanwhile, in a recent incident in Mumbai, a man was spotted riding a two-wheeler with six people. The cops were informed about the incident through Twitter. In the purported video posted by user Ramandeep Singh Hora, boys are seen travelling on a busy Mumbai street on a Honda scooter. Without helmets, the six can be seen standing on each other's shoulder.
The user in his post tagged the Mumbai police commissioner and Mumbai traffic police for appropriate action.
