An official said that a crowd of more than 60 people attacked a police station in the Burhanpur district of Madhya Pradesh on Friday and freed three suspects, including a dacoit, who were being held in the lock-up, news agency PTI reported.


About three in the morning, according to the official, a crowd invaded the Nepanagar police station, assaulted and hurt police officers who were on duty, and vandalised a number of police cars.

He stated that four police officers were hurt in the incident and are being treated at a private hospital.


Hema Meghwal, a dacoit carrying a bounty of Rs 32,000, and their two other companions who were being held in the jail were liberated by the mob. Meghwal was detained a few days ago, according to Rahul Kumar Lodha, the Burhanpur SP.


Senior authorities, including Collector Bhavya Mittal and the police superintendent, arrived to the scene after learning of the incident.

Four police officers were on duty at the time of the event, although the assailants were over 60, according to Lodha.


He said that the authorities were identifying the assailants from Surveillance video.


The officer claimed that in addition to releasing Meghwal from custody, the mob also released Magan Patel and another young person.

Earlier in January, a mob attacked the Delhi Police team who were on their way to detain three Nigerian nationals, whose visas had expired. Three Nigerians who had been "overstaying" in the nation were deported, according to the police, who claimed they had deployed a narcotics cell team to finish the process.
