Over 2,000 Dead In India During Monsoon. Entire Himachal Declared 'Natural Calamity Affected Area'

Monsoon Fury: In India, the highest casualty figure due to floods, lightning, and landslides in the monsoon season this year is reported by Bihar at 518, followed by Himachal Pradesh at 330.

A total of 2,038 people have lost their lives due to floods, lightning, and landslides in the monsoon season this year with Bihar reporting the highest casualty figure of 518 and Himachal Pradesh 330. Meanwhile, 101 people went missing and 1,584 received injuries during the rains and floods from April 1 to August 17, news agency PTI reported citing data prepared by the Union Home Ministry. As per the data, 335 districts in the country were affected by the rains, landslides, and lightning including 40 in Madhya Pradesh, 30 in Assam, and 27 in Uttar Pradesh.

Meanwhile, monsoon floods and landslides hit 12 districts in Himachal Pradesh and seven districts in Uttarakhand.

As many as 892 people drowned due to floods, 506 died due to lightning, and 186 died due to landslides in this period, PTI reported citing the home ministry data. The fatalities also include 454 people also died due to various other reasons during the season.

Besides the deaths in Bihar and Himachal Pradesh, 165 people died in rains, floods, landslides, and lightning in Gujarat, 138 in Madhya Pradesh, 107 each in Karnataka and Maharashtra, 90 in Chhattisgarh, and 75 in Uttarakhand.

According to the data, 160 teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed in various states including 17 teams deployed in Himachal Pradesh, 14 in Maharashtra, 12 each in Uttar Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, 10 each in Assam and West Bengal and 9 in Uttarakhand.

Himachal Pradesh Govt Declares Entire State "Natural Calamity Affected Area"

The details come as the government of Himachal Pradesh on Friday declared the whole state as a "Natural Calamity Affected Area".

"The State of Himachal Pradesh has witnessed unprecedented loss of human lives and huge destruction, damage and loss to public and private property during the ongoing monsoon season. The entire State has been badly ravaged by incessant rains leading to floods, cloudbursts, landslides, and slope failure taking heavy toll of lives and property. Thousands of dwelling units have been damaged or destroyed. There has been unprecedented loss of crops and agricultural land," a notification read.

It further mentioned, "Therefore, keeping in view the unprecedented grave situation leading loss of human life and damage, destruction and loss to public infrastructure and private property, the State Government has decided to declare the whole State of Himachal Pradesh as "Natural Calamity Affected Area"."

The notification mentioned that complete damage and loss assessments of property, livestock, infrastructure, and crops will be carried out by the respective Districts and Departments to be submitted to the Government for recovery and reconstruction efforts after the weather normalises and the accessibility is improved.
