New Delhi: A five-member Trinamool Congress (TMC) delegation will visit Nagaland on Monday to "stand by the families" of those killed and injured in the firing incident at Mon district.

West Bengal CM and TMC chief, Mamata Banerjee, has demanded a thorough investigation into the incident that killed as many as 13 people according to PTI.

“Worrisome news from Nagaland. Heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for the speedy recovery of those who were injured. We must ensure a thorough probe into the incident and ensure that all victims get justice!” had tweeted West Bengal CM Banerjee.

The party released a statement on Sunday announcing the members of the delegation. The members of the delegation include four MPs and the party spokesperson.

Nagaland CM Neiphiu Rio To Visit Mon

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio will also be visiting Mon on Monday morning accompanied by his cabinet colleagues and senior government officers to take an on-the-spot assessment of the situation and pay respect to the deceased. Rio will interact with state government functionaries and civil society organisation leaders in Mon.

Neiphiu Rio has also said that a Special Investigating Team (SIT) will investigate the case and ensure the delivery of justice.

Meanwhile, the state government announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakhs for the next of kin and the state government will pay the medical cost of the injured, reported PTI.

Mon Firing Incident

The firing incident took place on Saturday evening when the security forces opened fire at the daily wage workers of Oting village when they were returning to their homes in a pickup van.

The police claim that the incident was a case of mistaken identity as the police operation had confirmed input of the Yung Aung faction of the banned outfit NSCN (K) moving in the area.

After the workers did not return for hours, the villagers came in search and found their bodies. Consequently, angry villagers set up security vehicles on fire, and were shot at by the Assam Rifles who fired in self defence, told the police.

The incident claimed more lives, including security personnel. The Indian army has expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and said that an investigation is underway.
