Mon Firing Incident
The firing incident took place on Saturday evening when the security forces opened fire at the daily wage workers of Oting village when they were returning to their homes in a pickup van.
The police claim that the incident was a case of mistaken identity as the police operation had confirmed input of the Yung Aung faction of the banned outfit NSCN (K) moving in the area.
After the workers did not return for hours, the villagers came in search and found their bodies. Consequently, angry villagers set up security vehicles on fire, and were shot at by the Assam Rifles who fired in self defence, told the police.
The incident claimed more lives, including security personnel. The Indian army has expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and said that an investigation is underway.
