“Informed the Hon’ble Chairperson and the members that the Mukroh incident was a clear violation of human rights. Apprised them about the actions that have been taken like the Central Agency enquiry into the matter,” the chief minister added.
CM Sangma also stressed on the need for proper sensitisation of forces deployed in sensitive areas so that such incidents do not happen.
It is to be noted six individuals were reportedly killed and several more were wounded following an alleged altercation on Tuesday afternoon between locals and a group made up of Assamese police and forest guards. The reported altercation allegedly took place near the West Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya and the West Karbi Anglong region of Assam. An Assamese forest guard was one of those who died.
Earlier on Thursday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah met CM Sangma and assured him that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will probe the firing at Mukroh.
As per a statement issued by the government, Meghalaya has extended the suspension on mobile internet and data for another 48 hours in a bid to maintain law and order amid fresh tension.
