NEW DELHI: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Nusrat Jahan on Wednesday backed the open letter written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi by 49 eminent personalities raising concern over growing incidents of mob lynching in India. The TMC MP from West Bengal's Basirhat took on social media site Twitter and expressed her support with caption "Lets keep fighting for humanity #InclusiveIndia".
In her post she wrote, "as young MP, representing new age secular India, I request government and all lawmakers to frame a law to stop such assaults on democracy by mob lynchers."
Before concluding the post with Iqbal's Sare Jahan Se Achha Hindustan Humara , she wrote "Sirf insaaaniyat ke naate, gaay ke naam pe, bhagwan ke naam pe, kisi ki dari pe, toh kisi ki topi pe - khoon kharaba bandh kare " A group of 49 eminent personalities, including filmmakers, authors and actors, wrote to the prime minister on Tuesday, expressing concern over the recent instances of mob violence and lynching in the country. "We, as peace loving and proud Indians, are deeply concerned about a number of tragic events that have been happening in recent times in our beloved country," the letter dated July 23 said. "The lynching of Muslims, Dalits and other minorities must be stopped immediately. We were shocked to learn from the NCRB that there have been no less than 840 instances of atrocities against Dalits in the year 2016, and a definite decline in the percentage of convictions," it continued. They also regretted that "Jai Shri Ram" has been reduced to a "provocative war cry" and alleged the prime minister's inaction on the issue. The signatories also said that they regretted that "Jai Shri Ram" has been reduced to a "provocative war cry that leads to law and order problems, and lynchings take place in its name" WATCH: TMC leader Nusrat Jahan backs 49 celebrities' open letter to PMLets keep fighting for humanity #InclusiveIndia pic.twitter.com/B3Drb9QfSO
