'We Don't Want To Bulldoze': Mamata Banerjee Takes Dig At BJP Over Jahangirpuri Demolition Drive

Bulldozers razed several structures in Jahangirpuri on Wednesday during an anti-encroachment drive conducted by the BJP-ruled NDMC.

New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday took a swipe at the BJP over the demolition drive in Delhi's Jahangirpuri days after the area was rocked by communal violence, ANI reported.

Addressing a gathering at the Bengal Global Business Summit, Mamata Banerjee said, "We don't want to bulldoze. We don't want to divide the people, we want to unite the people. Unity is our main strength, culturally you will be very sound if you are united. But, if you are divided, it will fall."

Bulldozers razed several structures in Jahangirpuri on Wednesday during an anti-encroachment drive conducted by the BJP-ruled North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC).

However, the Supreme Court on Thursday halted the anti-encroachment drive in Jahangirpuri and said it would take a "serious view" of demolitions that took place after its order pausing them.

The TMC has decided to send an all-women fact-finding team to Jahangirpuri area in Delhi. The team, comprising six MPs, will submit its report to party supremo Mamata Banerjee.

The TMC's six-member fact-finding team comprises Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Satabdi Roy, Mala Roy, Pratima Mondal, Sajda Ahmed, and Aparupa Poddar, PTI reported.

Jahangirpuri saw violent clashes between two communities during a Hanuman Jayanti procession on Saturday. Eight police personnel and a local resident were injured in the violence.

Mamata Banerjee On Bengal Business Summit

The West Bengal CM said investment proposals worth Rs 3.42 lakh crore were received by the state in this year's business summit, PTI reported.

Addressing the valedictory session of the summit, Mamata Banerjee said that a total of 137 Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) and Letters of Intent (LoI) were signed for the investments.

"Around 40 lakh jobs will be created when these investments are made. A task force will be set up under the chief secretary for speedy implementation of these projects," Banerjee said.
