New Delhi: Two people, including a woman, were shot dead after a policeman opened fire outside the Bangladesh High Commission in Park Circus area in Kolkata on Friday afternoon, officials said. According to a report by news agency ANI, a woman biker died after a Kolkata Police Armed Police constable allegedly fired several rounds of bullets outside Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata. The policeman then shot himself dead.
As per a report by news agency PTI, the woman, who was riding pillion on a two-wheeler, fell down after being hit by a bullet after the on-duty policeman kept firing from his rifle, thereby, triggering chaos in the congested area, police sources said.
According to the report, the policeman, who was loitering in the area for nearly an hour, suddenly opened fire, injuring a few. Then he turned the gun on himself and shot himself on the head. Both of them died on the spot. The shots were fired from a self-loading rifle.
"The whole episode lasted for around five minutes," PTI quoted said an eye witness to the incident, Bablu Sheikh, as saying.
A huge contingent of police officials reached the area within a few minutes and took the bodies away.
Preliminary investigations on the incident are underway, police further said.
Senior police officials are currently present at the spot, as per sources.
