J&K: Three terrorists were killed by security forces in an encounter that broke out at Pantha Chowk in Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar on Saturday night. An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of police, Babu Ram, lost his life in the gun battle.


A senior police officer said that the terrorists attacked a check-post in an attempt to snatch weapons from policemen at Panthachowk, on the outskirts of Srinagar, late last evening. The security personnel retaliated and when the terrorists tried to escape, they were chased and cornered in an adjacent neighbourhood.


According to security forces, terrorists attacked joint naka party of security forces on the main road near Panthachowk after that search operation was launched by a joint team of Police, 20 and 50 RR, and CRPF in Dobey Mohalla.

A police officer said, “As the joint team cordoned the suspected house, the hiding terrorists opened fire at search party. The firing was retaliated by the joint party and encounter started."

IGP Kashmir confirmed the exchange of fire between the security forces and the terrorists.

Police sources said that 2-3 terrorists are believed to be trapped in the area. According to reports, the entire area has been cordoned off and firing is currently on from both sides.

This is the third major encounter in the last 36 hours in Kashmir; 10 terrorists have been killed since Friday evening.
