Jagat Prakash Nadda — The BJP President Who Will Lead The Party In 2024 Lok Sabha Elections

BJP on the final day of its National Executive meeting on January 17 decided to extend the tenure of National President Jagat Prakash Nadda till June 2024.

Union Home Minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Amit Shah on Tuesday announced that Jagat Prakash Nadda will be leading the party, as the party's national president, in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Nadda's extension as the party chief till June 2024 comes just ahead of his three-year term expiring on January 20. He was chosen as the "working president" of the BJP in June 2019, he shared the responsibility of running the party with Amit Shah for a year. In January 2020, Nadda was appointed as the BJP National President.

Who Is JP Nadda?

Having ancestral roots in Himachal Pradesh, JP Nadda was born and raised in Bihar. Nadda was born on December 2, 1960, in Patna. He did his schooling at St. Xaviers School, Patna and did his B.A. from Patna College, Patna University. In order to pursue a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.), Nadda attended Himachal Pradesh University in Shimla.

He entered politics in the year 1975 when he joined the then-ongoing Sampurna Kranti movement started by Jaya Prakash Narayan during Indira Gandhi's 'Emergency'. He joined Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) while studying at Patna University and entered student activism. He was elected as Secretary of the Patna University Students’ Union in 1977 as an ABVP candidate.

During the 1989 Lok Sabha elections, Nadda was made election in-charge of the BJP’s youth wing at just 29 years old. In 1991, he was made the National President of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha at 31 years.  

In 1993, he was elected as MLA in Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly for the first time and was elected Leader of the Opposition. He was re-elected in 1998 and became the Health Minister in the BJP state government.

In 2010, he was made the National General Secretary of the BJP. He was elected as a Rajya Sabha member in 2012 for the first time. He took command of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare during Narendra Modi-led NDA's first tenure at the Centre from 2014-2019.

JP Nadda tied the knot with Dr Mallika Nadda in 1991. The couple has two sons together. Nadda's mother-in-law is former Lok Sabha MP Jayashree Banerjee.

BJP Under JP Nadda's Leadership

During the tenure of JP Nadda (since June 2019 till date)

  • 17 state assembly elections were held with him being the party's National President. BJP or NDA formed government in 10 states.
  • Record victory in Gujarat assembly election 2022.
  • Under Nadda's tenure as National President, BJP came back to power in Haryana, Maharashtra, Assam, UP and Uttarakhand
  • BJP's best performance in the West Bengal assembly election 2021
