Background

International Yoga Day 2022: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Modi is participating in a mass yoga event at Mysore Palace ground on the occasion of International Day of Yoga. As many as 19 'asanas' will be exhibited in 45 minutes. Union Minister for Ayush Sarbananda Sonowal and Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai are also attending the event. Around 15,000 people, including 1,200 children, are taking part in the event.

Integrating the event with the 75th year of India's Independence, 75 ministers of the Centre are also performing yoga at 75 historical and cultural sites in the country.

This year, the theme is "Yoga for Humanity". The theme portrays how yoga served humanity in alleviating suffering during the Covid pandemic, the PMO said in a statement.

The major attraction of the IDY celebrations will be the "Guardian Ring", whereby the events organised across the world on the occasion will be relayed throughout the day.

The idea of the International Day of Yoga was proposed by PM Narendra Modi in his speech at United Nations General Assembly in 2014. June 21 was picked as the date to celebrate Yoga Day as it is the longest day of the year.

The BJP has organised yoga sessions at 75,000 places across the country. BJP president JP Nadda is attending a yoga session in Noida. Law Minister Kiren Rijiju is leading yoga day celebrations at Arunachal Pradesh's Dong, India's eastern-most village. The village is located near the point where borders of India, China and Myanmar meet.

Home Minister Amit Shah is participating in the yoga program at the famous Jyotirlinga Trimbakeshwar temple complex in Nashik, Maharashtra, while Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is in Coimbatore.
