Indira Gandhi 104th Birth Anniversary: PM Modi, Rahul Gandhi And Other Leaders Pay Tribute

Indira Gandhi was born in 1917 and was the first and only woman Prime Minister of India. She was elected as the PM in 1966 after Lal Bahadur Shastri's death.

New Delhi: November 19 marks the 104th birth anniversary of India's former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. She was born in 1917 and was the first and only woman Prime Minister of India.

Indira Gandhi was elected as the Prime Minister for the first time in 1966 after Lal Bahadur Shastri's death. She had also served as the Minister of Information and Broadcast in the Lal Bahadur Shastri government. Her birth anniversary is celebrated as National Integration Day to promote peace, unity, and integration among people.

Gandhi was called the 'Iron lady' of India and is remembered for some major decisions in Indian history including the nationalisation of Banks.

On her birth anniversary, incumbent Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his tributes to her via tweet.  “I pay my tributes to former Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi Ji on her birth anniversary” tweeted the PM.

Remembering India’s first and only woman Prime Minister, Rahul Gandhi tweeted “Her biggest power was to live among the people and share their joys and sorrows.”

Congress interim President, Sonia Gandhi paid floral tributes to mark the 104th birth anniversary to the former PM at Shakti Sthal, a memorial in Raj ghat marking her cremation site. 

Nationalist Congress Party leader and Maharashtra Minister Nawa Malik remembered her for her leadership role and said, “Homage to the Former Prime Minister of India Smt. Indira Gandhi Ji on her birth anniversary. Her steadfast leadership and valour will be remembered for generations to come.”

Biju Janata Dal President and Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik tweeted on the occasion, “Remembering former Prime Minister of India, Bharat Ratna #IndiraGandhi on her birth anniversary.  #NationalIntegrationDay”

Indira Gandhi, daughter of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, was the president of the Indian National Congress before being elected as the Prime Minister. She was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1971 and was also included in the 100 powerful women list by Time Magazine.
