Himachal: Satwant Trivedi Made Acting DGP After Sanjay Kundu's Transfer Following HC Order

Himachal Pradesh News: Satwant Atwal Trivedi, a 1996-batch IPS officer, has been given the additional charge of the Director General of Police (DGP).

Hours after the relocation of the state police chief Sanjay Kundu to the Ayush department as principal secretary, the Himachal Pradesh government on Tuesday entrusted Satwant Atwal Trivedi, a 1996-batch IPS officer, with the additional charge of the Director General of Police (DGP). Trivedi, presently serving as Additional Director General of Police (Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau) and CID, will shoulder the responsibilities of the DGP until further orders, as stated in the official notification issued by the government, news agency PTI reported.

This is not the first time Trivedi has assumed this role; in June 2023, she was assigned the additional charge of the DGP during Kundu's previous leave, PTI's report mentioned.

Notably, Trivedi holds the distinction of being the first IPS woman officer from Himachal Pradesh. In January 2023, she was honoured with the prestigious President's Police Medal (PPM) for her distinguished service. Beyond state boundaries, Trivedi has also been the first IPS woman officer of both the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the Border Security Force (BSF). Known for her advocacy on issues concerning women in uniform, Trivedi has been a vocal proponent for gender equality within the forces, the report stated.

Hailing from Bilaspur in Himachal Pradesh, Trivedi is an alumna of St Bede's College and made history as the first woman Superintendent of Police (SP) in the state.

Sanjay Kundu's Transfer After Himachal Pradesh High Court Order

The decision to transfer Sanjay Kundu, the former DGP, came in compliance with the orders from the Himachal Pradesh High Court. The court directive aimed to prevent Kundu and the Kangra district police chief from potentially influencing an ongoing investigation into a complaint filed by Palampur-based businessman Nishant Sharma. Sharma alleges threats to himself, his family, and property. Moreover, he questioned the role of the Director General of Police, claiming that he received calls urging him to come to Shimla, PTI reported.

The Himachal Pradesh High Court, in its order dated December 26, 2023, stated that it was intervening due to "exceptional circumstances" and noted the Home Secretary's purported negligence in addressing the presented material in the case.
