Hathras Stampede: More than 100 people lost their lives and several others sustained injuries in a tragic stampede during a religious congregation in a village in Hathras district on Tuesday. This incident serves as a grim reminder of previous religious gatherings across India, where overcrowding and panic often lead to deaths and injuries.

Some of the highest death tolls caused by stampedes at religious gatherings include the death of over 340 devotees at Maharashtra's Mandhardevi temple in 2005. Later, at least 250 died at Rajasthan's Chamunda Devi temple in 2008.

 Here is a list of such previous deadly stampedes:

  • March 31, 2023: In Indore city, during a 'havan' programme on Ram Navami, a collapse of a slab on an ancient 'bawdi' led to the deaths of at least 36 people.

  • January 1, 2022: At the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir, 12 people lost their lives and many others were injured due to a stampede caused by a heavy rush of devotees.

  • July 14, 2015: In Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh, 27 pilgrims died and 20 were injured during a stampede at a major bathing spot on the banks of the Godavari river on the opening day of the 'Pushkaram' festival.

  • October 3, 2014: Shortly after Dussehra celebrations ended, a stampede at Gandhi Maidan in Patna resulted in the deaths of 32 people and injuries to 26 others.

  • October 13, 2013: Near Ratangarh temple in Madhya Pradesh's Datia district, 115 people lost their lives and over 100 were injured during a stampede amidst Navratri festivities.

  • November 19, 2012: During Chhath Puja at Adalat Ghat on the banks of the Ganga river in Patna, around 20 people died and many others were injured when a makeshift bridge collapsed.

  • November 8, 2011: At Har-ki-Pauri ghat in Haridwar, at least 20 people died in a stampede during a religious event on the banks of the Ganga river.

  • January 14, 2011: At Pulmedu in Kerala's Idukki district, 104 Sabarimala devotees were killed and over 40 were injured when a jeep collided with homebound pilgrims, news agency PTI reported.

  • March 4, 2010: In Uttar Pradesh's Pratapgarh district, about 63 people died in a stampede at Ram Janki Temple during an event where people had gathered to receive free clothes and food.

  • September 30, 2008: At Chamunda Devi temple in Rajasthan's Jodhpur city, nearly 250 devotees lost their lives and over 60 were injured during a stampede triggered by rumours of a bomb threat.

  • August 3, 2008: At Naina Devi temple in Himachal Pradesh's Bilaspur district, 162 people died and 47 were injured in a stampede caused by rumours of rockslides.

  • January 25, 2005: During an annual pilgrimage at Mandhardevi temple in Maharashtra's Satara district, over 340 devotees were trampled to death and hundreds were injured due to slippery steps, PTI reported.
