Gurpurab 2023: Sikh Jatha Departs For Pakistan To Pay Obeisance To Guru Nanak Dev — WATCH

Guru Nanak Jayanti 2023: A 'Sikh Jatha' from Delhi heads to Pakistan for Guru Nanak Dev's 554th Birthday. This comes as Pakistan has issued 3000 visas for pilgrims to visit key Gurdwaras in their country.

A 'Sikh Jatha' left New Delhi on Friday for Pakistan to partake in the darshan of Gurdwaras in celebration of the 554th Birthday of Baba Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikh religion. Approximately 3000 visas were issued by the Pakistan High Commission for Sikh pilgrims from India to attend the event scheduled from November 25 to December 04, 2023. This year, Guru Nanak Jayanti falls on November 27, 2023 (Monday), and is celebrated 15 days after Diwali.

"During the visit, the pilgrims, inter alia, would go to Dera Sahib, Panja Sahib, Nankana Sahib, and Kartarpur Sahib. Expressing his views on the occasion, Charge d’Affaires, Mr. Aizaz Khan, extended his heartfelt felicitations to the pilgrims and wished them a safe journey," stated the Pakistan High Commission in India.

The celebrations mark the 554th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, observed on the full moon day of Kartik month. Guru Nanak Dev was born in 1469 in the village of Talvandi in the Punjab region of present-day Pakistan, now known as Nankana Sahib.

Guru Nanak Dev laid the foundation of the Sikh religion, earning him the title of the first Guru. The Sikh community affectionately addresses Guru Nanak Dev by various names, including Nanak, Baba Nanak, Nanak Dev, and Nanak Shah.

The occasion is celebrated as 'Prakash Parv,' and on this day, Sikh communities visit gurdwaras, engage in seva (selfless service), and partake in langar (community kitchen) in the name of Guru Nanak. Kirtan (devotional singing) is performed in gurdwaras, and the day is celebrated as Gurpurab.

"Ik Onkar," a term meaning 'God is one,' was propagated by Guru Nanak Dev, signifying the core philosophy of Sikhism – the belief in one universal God.
