Gujarat: Man Arrested For Spying On Indian Army For Pakistan's ISI In Surat, Say Police

According to authorities, the man had collected Rs 75,856 from an ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence) agent named Hamid from Pakistan.

A man from Surat, Gujarat, was arrested on Tuesday for reportedly spying for the Pakistani intelligence organisation, ISI, and giving critical information about the Indian Army with his handler agent for money, news agency PTI reported citing officials.

Surat Crime Branch apprehended Deepak Salunke, a resident of Bhuvneshwari Nagar, based on a particular tip-off.

According to a police press release, he has so far received Rs 75,856 from a Pakistani ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence) agent by the name of Hamid.

Salunke was captured by the ISI using a Facebook account set up in a woman's identity. The account handler revealed his identity as Hamid after gaining his trust, it added.

According to the press statement, the accused began communicating private information about the Indian Army and specifics like its movements on Hamid's instructions through WhatsApp messages and calls made using a SIM card obtained through Hamid's connections.

Salunke reportedly owns a store in Surat.

Further investigation is underway.

A driver for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) was detained earlier in November by Delhi Police with the assistance of security organisations for conveying sensitive and private information to Pakistan. According to the news agency ANI, the driver was honey-trapped by the Pakistan intelligence agency ISI.

To determine whether further MEA workers are connected to the matter, law enforcement and intelligence services launched an investigation.

It is to be noted that Rajasthan Police apprehended a 46-year-old man from Delhi earlier this year for allegedly spying for Pakistan. In 2016, the individual was granted Indian citizenship.

Earlier in October, a 50-year-old Chinese woman who claimed to be a 'Buddhist monk' was detained by Delhi police on suspicion of being a Chinese spy, according to news agency IANS.
