Gandhi Jayanti 2018: October 2 is considered to be a proud day for all Indians as it marks the birthday anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi who is also known as Father of nation. India today celebrates 150th birthday of Gandhiji, lovingly called as ‘Baapu’ and the day is rejoiced as Gandhi Jayanti across the nation. Born on October 2, 1869 at Porbandar in Gujarat, Bapu played a key role in India’s fight for attaining freedom from over 200 years of the ‘British Rule’. Bapu played a pivotal part in India’s freedom struggle by conducting several campaigns and reuniting Indians to make our country independent again. The day is also observed as the “International Day of Non-Violence” by the United Nations (UN). On this day, Bapu is being remembered for his principles of non-violence and Satyagraha that he followed. People wish each other with patriotic greetings, exchanging messages, images and GIFs of Mahatma Gandhi remembering his contribution in India’s road to independence.
The tag of Mahatma ‘Great Soul’ was conferred upon him by Indian Poet and Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Tagore use to refer him as Mahatma in his letters to him. The famous bhajan ‘Raghupati Raghava Raja Ram’ is often played and sung by many while remembering Bapu and several schools, offices and government departments hold prayers and get-together to mark the occasion.
