Former Attorney General For India Soli Sorabjee Passes Away After Contracting Covid

Veteran lawyer, former attorney general, and Padma Vibhushan recipient Soli Sorabjee passed away on Friday morning. He contracted coronavirus and was admitted to a private hospital in Delhi. He was 91.

Sorabjee began his law practice in 1953 in Bombay High Court. In 1971, he was designated as a senior counsel of the Supreme Court. He held the position of Attorney General of India twice - first from 1989-1990 and then from 1998-2004.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the death of Sorabjee's demise and said, "Soli Sorabjee was an outstanding lawyer and intellectual. Through law, he was at the forefront of helping the poor and downtrodden. He will be remembered for his noteworthy tenures India’s Attorney General. Saddened by his demise. Condolences to his family and admirer."

President Ram Nath Kovind also expressed grief over the loss of Sorabjee. President said, "In passing of Soli Sorabji, we lost an icon of India's legal system. He was among select few who deeply influenced evolution of constitutional law & justice system. Awarded with Padma Vibhushan, he was among most eminent jurists. Condolences to his family & associates."
