3.6 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts J&K's Katra

An earthquake of magnitude 3.6 was recorded in Jammu and Kashmir's Katra region in the early hours of Friday.

Tremors were felt in Jammu and Kashmir's Katra early morning on Friday, as a 3.6 magnitude earthquake hit the area at 5.02 am as per the National Centre for Seismology. The depth of the earthquake was 10 kilometres under the surface.

National Centre for Seismology in a tweet said, "Earthquake of Magnitude:3.6, Occurred on 17-02-2023, 05:01:49 IST, Lat: 33.10 & Long: 75.97, Depth: 10 Km, Location: 97km E of Katra, Jammu and Kashmir."

Tremors In Meghalaya

An earthquake measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale jolted Meghalaya on Thursday morning, according to the National Centre for Seismology. The quake occurred at 9:26 am at a depth of 46 km in the East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya. 

The tremors were felt in Meghalaya and some parts of Assam, including Guwahati. The quake was recorded just days after a 3.2 magnitude earthquake occurred in Assam which had its epicentre in the Hojai district at a depth of 10 km.

Earlier this month, an earthquake of 4.0 magnitude hit Manipur's Ukhrul, the National Center for Seismology informed. The earthquake occurred at 6.14 am on February 4.

Turkiye-Syria Earthquake

This comes under the shadow of the massive Turkiye-Syria earthquake which has caused severe damage to life and property in both countries.

Over 41,000 people have lost their lives in the devastating quake, of which 1,414 deaths were reported by the Syrian government's Health Ministry, and 4,400 by the UN humanitarian agency in rebel-held northwestern Syria, IANS reported. 

"At least 35,418 people have been killed in the twin quakes and 13,208 injured are still receiving treatment in our hospitals," Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was quoted as saying to Anadolu News Agency.

A massive earthquake measuring 7.8 magnitude hit the two countries in the early hours of February 6.
