Devendra Fadnavis After Taking Oath As Maharashtra CM: Shiv Sena Defied People's Mandate; Thanks NCP For Support

Mumbai: In a big twist, the BJP in Maharashtra joined hand with a faction of NCP leaders to form the government in the state, early this morning. Devendra Fadnavis after swearing-in as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra for the second consecutive term, attacked Shiv Sena and said that the party tried to ally with other parties while the people gave a mandate to BJP and Shiv Sena together in the recent assembly elections. He said that the state needed a stable government and not a 'Khichdi' government. "People had given us a clear mandate, but Shiv Sena tried to ally with other parties after results, as a result President's rule was imposed. Maharashtra needed a stable govt not a 'khichdi' government," Fadnavis told the reporters. He also thanked NCP Chief Sharad Pawar saying, "The state of Maharashtra wanted a stable govt and I would like to thank Sharad pawar ji that in order to give state a stable govt we came together and formed the government," Fadnavis said. Watch | Maharashtra needed a stable govt not a 'khichdi' govt: Devendra Fadnavis In the recent assembly elections, BJP had obtained 105 seats in the state while the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) obtained 54 seats. Devendra Fadnavis was sworn in as Maharashtra CM while Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar was sworn in as deputy CM. The dramatic move comes just hours after NCP, Congress and Shiv Sena announced that the government formation will take under the leadership of Uddhav Thackeray. The three parties were to make a formal announcement today. Earlier, the BJP, which emerged as the single largest party, could not stake claim to form a government as its ally Shiv Sena remained firm on rotating the Chief Minister's post and equal sharing of Cabinet berths. Shiv Sena parted its ways with BJP to explore ways to form a government. It, however, failed to prove the support of the required number of MLAs in the time given by state Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari. The Governor had then invited NCP, the third-largest party, to prove its ability to form the government failing which President's Rule was imposed in the state. The BJP won 105 seats in the 288-member assembly followed by Shiv Sena 56, NCP 54 and Congress 44. (with inputs from ANI)
