2 years of demonetisation: Let’s rewind EXACT 2 years from today! The entire country was glued to their television sets anticipating as to what PM Narendra Modi’s surprise announcement is going to be. After much wait, finally, PM Modi made a special television appearance at 8 pm and announced an exercise to ban over 85 per cent of high-value currency notes to curb black money laundering in the country. The sudden demonetisation decision led liquidity shortage and made the entire nation stand in long queues outside banks. More than 100 people reportedly lost their lives standing in queues to exchange their old currencies. PM Modi himself asked citizens to give him 50 days in order to bring the situation back to normal, but the pace of remonetisation was very slow. However, later government data claimed that the note ban decision had achieved its large purpose of moving India from tax non-compliant society to a compliant society, resulting in the formalisation of the economy and a blow to the black money. Opposition parties including the Congress party were one of the biggest worries for the government as a larger chunk of people initially agreed to bear burn on their pockets for the welfare of the nation. However, Opposition continued to hit back at the government over the rationale behind the move, with Congress president Rahul Gandhi alleging that note ban had only helped the PM Modi's capitalist friends. As today marks the second anniversary of the note ban, micro-blogging jury is back with a mixed judgement on demonetisation and its impact across industries. A section of people believes that money laundering and black money rackets still prevail in the country, while others support the Central government decision. Micro-blogging site Twitter has been flooded with remarks, criticism and tug of war amongst users who remember second anniversary of demonetisation. Here are some amazing Twitter reactions:
