Delhi: Major accident averted at IGI airport, Jet Airways flight suffers nose wheel malfunction
New Delhi: Delhi-bound Jet Airways flight experienced a nose wheel malfunction after landing on Wednesday, resulting in a steering problem at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA). The situation was brought under control on time and a major accident was averted.
The incident took place at around 4:30 p.m. when the 9W 2882, an ATR 72-500, flight from Dehradun lost control and landed on the Left side of runway, which led to blocking of the main runway for over two hours.
A total of 60 passengers and five crew members were aboard when the incident took place. The carrier released an official statement after the incident which said that “all 60 guests and five crew members have been safely deplaned. Jet Airways flight 9W 2882, an ATR 72-500, from Dehradun to Delhi of April 19, 2017 experienced a nosewheel malfunction after landing, resulting in a steering problem".
The statement also added that the "Guests are being looked after by the airline’s guest service teams and the aircraft is being towed away for maintenance”.
The operations on the runway could only be resumed around 7 p.m. after the aircraft was removed. The Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been briefed about the incident and has launched an inquiry on the same.
