Delhi Election Results HIGHLIGHTS | Brand Kejriwal Sweeps Capital; BJP Routed, Congress Steady At 0

Background

Delhi Election Result 2020 HIGHLIGHTS: After the voting for much-crucial Delhi Assembly elections 2020 ended on February 8, counting of votes will take place on February 11 (Tuesday). As per the Election Commission official statement, the national capital witnessed 62.59 per cent voter turnout this year, which was around 5 per cent less than the 2015 Assembly polls. The highest voting of 71.6 per cent was reported from the Ballimaran constituency, while the lowest turnout was in Delhi cantonment, which reported 45.4 per cent polling.

It appears to be that the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is going into the Assembly polls with the hope to repeat its stellar performance of the last legislative elections, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which bagged all seven seats here in the Lok Sabha election in May 2019, will be aiming at expanding its vote share in the national capital.

Nevertheless, even Congress is seeking to better its performance than last time when it did not bag any seat in the Assembly polls, but improved its vote share in 2019 polls. However, several Exit Poll results predict otherwise for the grand old party.

Counting time

Counting of votes will start around 8 am on Tuesday. However, ABP News will start is extensive coverage on Tuesday from 6 am. As per reports, the EC has set up around 21 centres for counting of votes. "We have set up 21 centres for counting of votes, wherein there will be a dedicated hall for every constituency. The counting will start at 8 am on February 11," Delhi's Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Ranbir Singh told new agency ANI.

What do Exit Polls say?

An exit poll conducted by ABP-CVoter projected a clean sweep for Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP in the bitterly-fought Delhi Assembly Elections. The exit poll has predicted AAP to get between 49 to 63 seats in the 70-member House, where the majority mark is 36, though it may lose a few seats here and there.

BJP which aimed to return to power in the national capital is expected to win between a low of 5 seats to a high of 19 seats. This means the saffron party’s 22-year-old wait may extend for another five years for a shot in the capital's government.

However, soon after Exit poll of various media houses predicted a thumping majority for AAP, several BJP leaders including Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP Delhi unit chief Manoj Tiwari dissed the claims and said that the saffron party would bag more than 45 seats in the national capital and form government.

The ABP News C-Voter survey also tipped Congress to be at a distant third with a maximum of four (0-4) seats in the polls. In the 2015 polls, AAP won 67 seats while the BJP collected the remaining three seats. The Congress had failed to bag even a single seat.

Even the poll of Exit Polls (an average of Exit Polls conducted by various media organisations) suggest the ruling AAP is all set to sweep back to power in Delhi. While some exit polls suggest that the BJP is likely to gain ground, it is not enough for the saffron party to have a taste of power, in spite of being out of power for almost two decades.

2015 Assembly Elections

In the last Delhi assembly election in 2015, the AAP won 67 of the 70 seats, with a total vote-share of 54 per cent. It's projected to rise to 56 per cent in 2020. The BJP is projected to secure a vote-share of 35 per cent, up from 32 per cent in the 2015 Delhi Assembly vote.
